Walmart announced today it is offering a $1,964.50 discount code for the first time, a move that could help the retailer attract shoppers as it tries to turn around its financials.

The $1 billion code, which is valid through Dec. 31, is valid only for Walmart Stores.

It is not valid on other brands, Walmart spokesman Kevin Gaffney told The Associated Press.

Walmart will send out the code to retailers and will send a reminder via email to the customers, Gaffey said.

The retailer will not charge customers for the code.

Walton-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced in November that it plans to sell a $2.99 discount code that allows customers to buy up to $2,999 worth of merchandise.

Wal-Mart and its competitors already have the largest discount codes in the world, with retailers including Walmart, Costco, Amazon.com Inc., and TJX Cos.

Walmart will offer the first discount code at the $1 trillion retailer, the company said.
